Epoxy Garage Cleaning Tips
When maintaining epoxy floors don’t use citrus cleaners or vinegar. Cleaners like these are acidic and will degloss epoxy floor coatings. One of the best ways to clean epoxy floors is with diluted ammonia. You can make a cleaning solution by adding 2-3 ounces of ammonia to 1 gallon of hot water. Here is a janitorial mop that you can use to clean your epoxy floors with the ammonia solution.
Add 2 to 3 ounces of ammonia to a gallon of hot water and apply with a microfiber mop.
Make sure to thoroughly rinse off epoxy floors with water after cleaning with soap. The residue of soap on epoxy floors can make them very slippery! The soap can also create a hazy film on the surface takes away that shiny finish. Try Windex on hazy areas, spills or sticky spots.
Conduct regular cleanings as dirt and grime can build up from vehicles and walking around your garage. The grime will eventually seep into the coating resulting in the epoxy to lose its beautiful shine. Over long periods of time grime can tear up epoxy floors and cause expensive repairs. You can avoid replacing your garage floor by simply keeping it clean!
Consider using a doormat towards the entrance of your garage or next to your car door. Scrape off dirt, mud or snow salt from shoes so you don’t have to clean as much.
Epoxy floors are resistant to many chemicals but some chemicals are best to remove immediately to prevent damage. Engine oil is a big one to remove fast. It contains harmful chemicals that can ruin the coating.
Remove these chemicals as soon as possible:
- Engine oil
- Gas
- Paint
- Antifreeze
- Vinegar
- Citrus Cleaners
You could keep a neutralizing agent in your garage just in case any spills happen. Neutralizing agents are used to neutralize acidic chemicals.
Epoxy Floor Cleaning FAQ
A hard foam mop is the most efficient because a string mop will leave streak marks and will not clean your epoxy floors with the most efficiency.
Every 4 months a deep scrub may be required to get that epoxy shine. Possibly 3 if your floors get heavy traffic.
Rust stains can be lightly scrubbed with a kitchen scrubbing sponge and warm water.
Sweep and vacuum the entire area. Use a hard foam mop and warm/hot water to get rid of all the built-up dirt. Then use a clear ammonia/water mix (2 ounce ammonia / gallon of hot water) for second mopping.
Liquids that have been spilled should be vacuumed up along with any dirt and grime with a shop vac. After mop up with warm water.
Yes, spills such as gas, oil, or paint should be cleaned up immediately. It will damage the surface of an epoxy floor if allowed to sit for too long.
No, avoid using steel wool or harsh cleaning chemicals like comet. These cleaning materials are too abrasive and you could damage your floors.

We had a large protein shake spill on our carpet and found it was very difficult to get out, particularly the smell. After about a week of trying to shampoo it on our own, we decided to enlist professional help. Gary was able to fit us in the same day we called. He and his team were very conscientious, knowledgeable and enjoyable to work with. They also took the time to explain the process of how they were going to treat the carpet. Kathy Stitman10/25/2019I can’t recommend Advanced Carpet Care enough. Their work is excellent and the prices are great too. They came with 2 men, which speeds things up. They also moved all my furniture out of the way so they could clean all the carpet. I typically have seen other companies just go around obstacles but these guys actually move stuff so they can be thorough. After they left, the carpets looked like new and smelled fresh.We have been putting off carpet cleaning because of the chemicals, but these guys use GREEN non-toxic solutions and they still leave you with really clean carpets! If they need a little more cleaning power they can use a mild detergent that is still very earth friendly.Lastly, they are a local business, and I prefer giving my money to the smaller service-minded business over a large corporation.
